Sukarare is the name a village in Central Lombok which known as the craft center for woven cloth in Lombok. From Mataram to this village can be reached in 30-minute drive. Sukarara people, especially the women, are familiar with weaving. Since childhood they had learned to weave cloth with a simple motive. This habit is inherited from generation to generation. There are even custom rules, womenof Sukarare who have not been able to weave would not have a license tp marry. If you dare to violate, the penalty shall be paid in form of money or rice.
 
Weaving for Sukarare  women is a livehood. Sukarare women can become economically independent and participative in sustaining family households thanks to their weaving ability. Sukarare women wove songket type cloth, all by hand. To complete a songket could take weeks. The yarn is also special, using gold thread. No wonder the price is not cheap. They even went millions of rupiahs .
 
Sukarare women cloth is not sold in any other place. Just in Sukarare village. It is intended so in order to keep and ensure the originality of the woven cloth and at once to support visiting travellers. So if you want to own a Sasak woven cloth, especially songket, please do come to Sukarare Village. Look how the women there weaving cloth from generation to generation without knowing the word stop.
